Lakers secure playoff spot against Nuggets
The Los Angeles Lakers made sure that they will be in the postseason with a 103-97 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Friday night. The Lakers were playing without Kobe Bryant nor their coach, Mike Brown.
Bryant sat out the game against the Nuggets resting his bruised shin while Coach Mike Brown left Staples Center shortly before tipoff due to undisclosed personal reasons. Kobe Bryant virtually became an assistant coach during the game, shouting instructions to teammates all throughout the evening.
Andrew Bynum waxed hot and led the Lakers with 30 points while Matt Barnes’ outside shooting contributed a season-high 24 points. All-Star Pau Gasol chipped in 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers.
Denver was led by Andre Miller with 20 while Al Harrington and Arron Afflalo scored 18 each. The Nuggets are now tied with Houston for the seventh playoff spot.
The Lakers will face the reigning champion Dallas Mavericks on Sunday.
Mavericks Decide To Release Lamar Odom
The Dallas Mavericks have decided to part ways with the reigning Sixth Man of the Year Lamar Odom. On Monday, the Mavericks have announced that they are placing Lamar Odom on the inactive list for the rest of the season – dashing his hopes of participating in the playoffs.
Figuring in a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers that sent Tyson Chandler to the New York Knicks last December, Odom performed lacklusterly when compared against his previous season with the Lakers. With Lamar Odom on the inactive roster, he cannot play in the playoffs even if he is traded to another team because he wasn’t waived before the March 23 deadline.
There are talks and jokes now that Lamar Odom may have left his head and heart with the Lakers and some people are speculating that there is a possibility for Odom to make a comeback with the LA Lakers for the next season.
Whatever happens, Lamar Odom is still an established player and this season should not be taken against him.
NBA Team Dallas Mavericks Background
The Dallas Mavericks play in the Western Conference and in a very competitive Southwest Division. This division includes the San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets, New Orleans Hornets and the Memphis Grizzlies. If you've noticed, two of these teams are also within the state of Texas, which is where the Mavericks also play. The majority of these teams have made the playoffs these past several years.Big rival games include those with the San Antonio Spurs and the Phoenix Suns. The San Antonio Spurs are always good, and with them being a local neighboring team, games between the Mavericks and Spurs are always hotly contested. Some history exists with the Phoenix Suns, primarily because All-Star point guard Steve Nash used to be a Dallas Maverick.
A radio contest was used to determine the team name. The three finalist names were the Mavericks, Wranglers and Express. The owner at the time, Donald Carter, made the final choice to go with the Mavericks. Of course, everyone today knows the current owner of the Dallas Mavericks is Mark Cuban, the billionaire entrepreneur.
