Spurs secure top seed in Western Conference
The San Antonio Spurs have once again clinched the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference Playoffs – the tricky part is, trying not to blow it again.
Tim Duncan scored 18 points on Monday night as the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 124-89. But the Spurs are wary. Last season, they took the top seed against all expectations only to bow out in the first round. But they won’t let that happen again.
This year will mark the first time the Spurs’ Big Three are going into the postseason in full health since 2008. And since they only have two games left in the regular season, it might as well be time to rest for Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili.
J.J. Hickson gave 14 points and 10 rebounds while Raymond Felton and Jonny Flynn combined for 23 points as the injury-depleted Trail Blazers fielded only nine players.
Danny Green contributed 18 for the Spurs, Parker 13, while Stephen Jackson and Gary Neal scored 12 apiece.
Will Rajon Rondo Be Out of Boston Before the Trade Deadline?
Word has it that Rajon Rondo is on the trading block. Makes sense. The Boston Celtics are getting old and Rondo is the only real trade asset available to bring in new and youthful players. Rondo’s contract is manageable, he’s young, and good point guards are almost a necessity if a team wants to make it deep into the playoffs.
Which teams could be in the market for Rajon Rondo? The Lakers would have to be the leading candidate. Derek Fisher is hold and can’t effectively hold his position anymore. The Nets might be another interesting team if they can’t keep Deron Williams in New Jersey. Rondo would be a great replacement and would still make a good draw for a Dwight Howard to come to town.
There’s only two more weeks until the NBA trade deadline, and perhaps only two more weeks to see Rajon Rondo play with the Celtics. To catch one of these games, find available tickets here to one of their home games against the Nets, Knicks, Rockets or Trail Blazers. These are the only Boston home games left, so you better hurry.
The Portland Trail Blazers play in the Western Conferences under the Northwest Division. During the team's history, which dates back to 1970, the Trail Blazers have won one championship, three conference titles, and four division titles.
Their biggest division rivals include the Denver Nuggets and the Utah Jazz. Games featuring the Trail Blazers and either one of these teams are always hotly contested events. The Portland Trail Blazers used to enjoy a regional rival with the Seattle Supersonics, but that team has since left to become the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Lakers are the other significant conference rival.
The team was founded in 1970. The Trail Blazer name was selected from a contest that yielded more than 10,000 entries. Trail Blazers is a fitting team name given the state's history of pioneers. The Trail Blazer logo is that of a pinwheel that is made up of five red lines and five black lines. The image is supposed to depict 5 on 5 basketball. The team's mascot is Blaze the Trail Cat.
